PSR, in partnership with the Italian company RINA, was hired by the World Bank for a strategic decarbonization project at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP), in the Brazilian state of Ceará. Executive Director of PSR, Rafael Kelman; Head of Decarbonization, Luana Gaspar; and Business Development expert, Ricardo Lagares, were on site to kick off the project and visit some of the companies present at the complex. The initiative marks the beginning of an important action aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the State of Ceará, in line with the decarbonization plans of the state and the country.

One of the main objectives of the project is to carry out a detailed inventory of emissions, as well as an energy and water balance at the CIPP. Based on this data, emissions reduction targets will be established for 2030, 2040 and 2050, in line with Ceará’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

In addition, PSR and RINA will develop a decarbonization roadmap for the Complex, customized to local characteristics and aligned with international best practices. The plan will also include scenarios and estimates of costs and benefits for implementing the proposed actions.

“The government of Ceará announced a plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. To do so, it needs to determine current emissions, which include those from the Pecém Port Industrial Complex. Our project will take a closer look at CIPP’s activities and study decarbonization alternatives aligned with this goal of the state government,” said Rafael Kelman.

With a technical approach, the partnership between the institutions reinforces the dialogue at the state level on the sustainability agenda and the role of CIPP as a strategic point for low-carbon industrial development in the country.
