The PSR team held a workshop, together with Siglasul, on the project “Evaluation of Regulatory Models for the Implementation of Intelligent Metering Systems in the Brazilian Distribution System”. The event took place in a partnership between the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).

Executed by PSR and Siglasul, the study assessed the need for regulatory intervention in the implementation of intelligent metering systems in the Brazilian distribution system. Considered in the study was the role that these systems play in modernizing the electricity sector and redefining the roles of distributors and consumers.

“The discussion about the dissemination of smart metering is a fundamental step towards the modernization of the Brazilian electricity sector. In turn, the choice of the regulatory alternative for its implementation must consider the enormous heterogeneity of the country’s concessions, as well as the challenges the sector is currently facing,” says Angela Gomes, technical director in the Networks area at PSR.

In addition to the technical director, other PSR specialists who participated in the event included Thais Sobrosa, lead analyst in Regulatory Affairs; Maria Clara Valente, analyst in Regulatory Affairs; Paula Valenzuela, technical director in Regulatory Affairs; and Lucas Fachetti, intern in the networks area.

The final report, presented during the workshop, held at ANEEL, should be used as a starting point by the agency to begin a public participation process dedicated to discussing the topic.
